Brett Michael's on Idol?

Something interesting I found on TVGuide.com: 60 percent of people polled believe Bret Michaels should replace Simon Cowell on American Idol. Now, I like Brett, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I was a big Poison fan back in the day, but I'm not sure this is a good idea. In the past few months, Michaels has suffered from appendicitis, a brain hemorrhage, and a stroke. I think some higher power might be trying to tell him something. I don't doubt he has plenty of advice to offer. He's been a performer for nearly two decades, and can offer words on music and performance. But he does have children to think about, and I think they need him more than Idol does. However, I do shudder to think of the alternatives.

American Idol Elimination Mini-Recap

I haven't been too into this season of Idol, but since Adam Lambert was performing, I thought I would give it a chance again. However, once the opening lip sync began, I hit the fast forward until that awesome green laser cone surrounded Lambert, who totally rocked a re-worked version of Whaddaya Want from Me for an enthusiastic audience. As far as the two that went home, Michael Lynch was spared another week (good job America), which left Katie Stevens and Andrew Garcia the ones to go home. Tim Urban must have made some deal with a higher power. What do you think? Did the right ones go home?

American Idol: Big Mike gets saved

In a shocking turn of events last night, Michael "Big Mike" Lynche ended up in the bottom three, and was ultimately the one contestant revealed to have the lowest number of votes. However, thanks to the controversial judges save, Lynche was able to perform "This Woman's Work" (arguably his best performance to date) and wowed them enough to remain in the competition. What do you think? Should Big Mike have been saved? Or should he have gone home?

Adam Lambert to perform and mentor on Idol

Wow, what a difference a year makes. As previously posted, Adam Lambert was scheduled to perform on American Idol, however Lambert has confirmed via his Twitter page that he will also serve as a mentor to the remaining top eight next week. He also promises he will be on his best, family friendly behavior (damn,where's the fun in that.)

I know what you are thinking: How can someone who hasn't been around that long possibly serve as a mentor. I think in this case it makes sense. Lambert has had a very interesting year, and after his AMA performance, can probably give tips on what not to do. I think he'll do a fine job. What do you all think?

American Idol Elimination: And then there were 9

Well, I've been reluctant to talk about Idol, since I sang the praises of Tim Urban, only to have him give a bizarre performance the following week. And it's only been downhill from there. What can I say? I'm a very proud man. Well, this time around Tim found himself in the bottom 3 yet again, along with Didi Benami and Katie Stevens. Luckily for Tim, some tweens out there still find him adorable, and he was saved yet again, with Didi becoming the unfortunate one to go home.

Do you think America got it right? Or has Tim Urban finally reached the heights last touched by Sanjaya?

Lacey Brown is first top 12 Idol to go

24 year-old Laci Brown was the first of the top 12 to be sent home on American Idol, after receiving the least amount of votes and failing to win the judges save, as well as allowing fellow bottom two/roommate Paige Miles to remain in the competition. The save is used in order to give a chance for the person with the lowest votes to be brought back by the judges. Last year the hopeful Idol was asked to redo the song that placed them in the bottom two. This year they were allowed to choose from any song that was performed this season. Brown chose "The Story" by Brandi Carlile, which has been considered one of her best, however it was not enough to persuade the panel.

My DVR Moment of the Week

This week goes to American Idol's Michael Lynche for continuing (imo) to dominate the men. His performance was very moving, and really showed that unique balance of talent and performance that should be required of all Idols.

Runner Up: Gabrielle Carteris  on this weeks Criminal Minds. Though the episode was normal CM antics (crazy person abducts, the team assembles a profile, they spring into action before it's too late) what distinguishes this one is the former original 90210 cast member utters the line "I was in high school once," while driving with her daughter in the car. If that isn't a nod, I don't know what is.

Missed Moment: J'Lo on How I Met Your Mother. I've heard both good and bad things, but for anyone that reads this, you know I always like to see for myself.

Michael Lynche's Song Choice

After watching Michael Lynche's performance again, I kept thinking to myself that I have heard this song before on T.V., but just couldn't place where. Then it hit me: On So You Think You Can Dance, Melissa and Ade danced an extraordinary piece by Tyce Diorio to that same song by Maxwell.  In my opinion, the dance Melissa and Ade did is one of the best in the shows history, and Lynche's take was by far my favorite this season. It just goes to show you what the power one awesome piece of music can bring out in someone, be they a dancer or signer. All future Idol contestants (and even the current ones) should take note of that.

American Idol's Top 12 Revealed

Another week, another set of eliminations. Before we get to that, let me just say that I have got to hand it to Tim Urban. I know that in a previous post I had reported that he had failed to impress the judges, but for the past couple of weeks he has really taken their criticism to heart and used it to improve. This week, he was even able to handle a difficult song (Hallelujah, which some people might fondly remember from the first Shrek movie) and even made it his own. He might have taken the night had it not been for Michael Lynch and his take on This Woman's Work. It would be interesting to see if Urban can make it all the way. Next week is Rolling Stone's Week. I don't know whether to be delighted, or to shudder. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Adam Lambert Booked to Perform on American Idol

Surfing the web and came across this: Adam Lambert to Perform on American Idol

According to the article, Lambert reported via Twitter that he will be on Idol, but can't reveal the date just yet (ugh, such a tease, but you gotta love it). Being cursed with the need to verify, I found the twitter account (and yes, it is real, or at least it seems like it. I am after all very easy to impress sometimes) and it does in fact state he will be on. I hope the reveal the date soon. I regret missing the AMA performance, but did get a chance to catch him perform on So You Think You Can Dance, and thought he did a fantastic job. Plus, I think he's learned his lesson, so anyone concerned because kids are watching can just chill out and let the guy do his thing.

Question of the Day: 2/26/10

I recently read that Howard Stern has stated that should he go to Idol, he would want Ellen and Kara removed and would bring in his own people(I'm guessing he'll still let Randy sit in). Let's say by some off chance that this is even remotely true, my question for you is "which version would you watch?" Stern or Ellen? Comment away!!!

American Idol Top 20: Tim Urban still in the running

It may seem like I'm picking on Tim Urban, but really I'm not. I just don't understand the voting public sometimes. It's not like I think he is horrible, he just didn't bring his A-game (granted a few did, but some still did better). As always, I have to remind myself that this isn't necessarily a competition based solely on talent. There are other factors involved, such as performance, personality, that have to mesh well with the voice. Just like So You Think You Can Dance is a search for America's favorite dancer, this one is a search for America's favorite singer. Favorite, not most talented. *Sigh* But on to the point of the post. Here are the remaining top twenty contestants: Didi Benami, Crystal Bowersox, Lacey Brown, Michelle Delamor, Katelyn Epperly, Siobhan Magnus, Paige Miles, Lilly Scott, Katie Stevens, Haeley Vaughn, Lee Dewyze, Andrew Garcia, Todrick Hall, Casey James, Aaron Kelly, Alex Lambert, Michael Lynche (I thought he was supposed to be removed. Did I miss something?), John Park, Jermaine Sellers, and Tim Urban.

Adam Lambert booked for Leno

I think The Tonight Show with Jay Leno finally found a way for me to watch, at least for one night: Leno Books Adam Lambert and Others for Tonight Show Return.

If you remember, Lambert (who many thought should have won last seasons Idol, but we won't get into that here) created quite a stir for his racy AMA performance, and for later being dropped by Good Morning America. Bringing in anyone with controversy is always a plus, and this will also appeal to the younger audience that normally would pass up Leno for Conan (sorry, I just had to mention that). Unfortunately, after that night, I probably won't watch again, just like I assume others will tune out as well.

American Idol Replacement Fails to Impress

Poor Tim Urban, as per the AP, his chance to show the judges what he can do didn't go over too well. The 20 year old was chosen to replace Chris Golightly after it was found out Golightly had a previous record deal. However, his take on "Apologize" was not well received, though to be fair, he was not alone.

Man, that must really suck. You are given a second chance, and then it doesn't go over well. It is up to the public though, so anything can still happen (Sanjaya anyone?)

Pattie LaBelle comments on American Idol judges

Here's something interesting from the Associated Press: Patti LaBelle: Some Idol judges aren't qualified.

The fabulous Ms. LaBelle, a legend best known for the original "Lady Marmalade" song, commented that some of the judges lacked the skill to really critique, but would not name names (man, I really wish she had, that would have been killer). She went on to say that some of the comments are just too harsh, and tells hopefuls say I can when others say you can't.

I agree with her to some extent. Being mean for the sake of being mean is not helpful at all. But if you actually back it up with some constructive commentary, then that makes it a little better. I've just never understood how someone that beat out thousands could still end up being awful during the voting rounds (ala Sanjaya) since, and correct me if I'm wrong, they were picked because they weren't awful? Well, I guess some mysteries will always be left unsolved. Hmmm, I wonder if Sanjaya is considered one of TV's biggest blunders. Maybe something like biggest blunder of the voting public? That's one I didn't think of before I guessed Geraldo and Al Capone's Vault. I'm gonna go back to the EW list and check.

This article did three things for me: First, it showed his appreciation for Ellen, whose perspective as a stage performer is a benefit to the contestants. Second, it calmed my fears of Howard Stern being the replacement, since Cowell himself said Stern would not be a good match. Third, it brought up the choice of Perez Hilton, who is mentioned in the article of campaigning really hard for it. Simon thinks he is a good choice, and I have nothing against Perez Hilton (I agree with Simon, he is a character with lots of personality, and isn't afraid to be confrontational) but, as with my hesitation with Stern, I wonder what his background in music is. I guess I will have to do a little research before I make any personal judgments. To be honest though, it wouldn't matter what I said, it's up to Simon and the producers, and I anticipate that whomever they choose will come with controversy, no matter what.

Update on American Idol's Chris Golightly

According to TVGuide.com, Chris Golightly was released from American Idol due to the fact that he failed to mention his past record deal. According to a source form the show, all contestants must state any record contracts, past or present, that they have been a part of. This is a shame, because it is also mentioned that once someone is dropped form the top 24, they are no longer eligible to audition. Unfortunately, we may not hear his side for a while, since Golightly is bound by a confidentiality agreement.
