My DVR Moment of the Week, 3/18/2010

So many to choose from, but hands down, the moment goes to the return of Glee and the amazing Jane Lynch. Her performance of "Vogue" may not have had much to do with the plot (more connected to this week's "Power of Madonna" episode), but that didn't make it any less fun.

Runner-Up:
The return of the "Evil Will Wheaton" on The Big Bang Theory. His manipulations caused Penny to break up with Leonard, leading the boys to lose a bet with Stuart and appear in Superheroine drag at the Comic Book Store. When I saw the picture of Raj as Catwoman, I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. His empowered line was one of the best in the entire episode.

Second Runner-up: Drunk Stefan on the Vampire Diaries. Too bad it didn't cure the urge to feed. And an memo to the producers: You've just got David Anders. Don't you dare mess it up like Heroes did.

Missed Moment:
I'm still behind on Project Runway. The finale is this week, so I better catch up fast.

My DVR Moment of the Week

There are so many reasons to love The Vampire Diaries, but they have just given me one more: Kelly Hu as Pearl. Here I thought Bonnie's Grams was the only person that could bring Damon to his knees "I've got 400 years on you, little boy," she sneers right before gouging his eyes with her fingers. She's right, she does have more power, but so did Lexie, and we all know what happened to her(if you don't, I suggest you check out the "169 Candles" episode.) Mystic Falls might be getting a little full at this point, but if they keep bringing on the uber-vamps like Miss Pearl, I don't think I will mind too much.

Runner-up: Anthony's return on Project Runway. Although it meant losing Maya (who surprisingly quit) his entrance brought back a ray of sun that I was worried we would never see again. Not only did he get to come back, he won the challenge. If you are gonna come back, come back big, and no one came back bigger than Anthony.

Missed Moment: I always try to see the Ten Commandments as an Easter tradition, but unfortunately some last minute errands kept me away. Oh well, that's what DVD's are for.

Project Runway Recap: Hello Anthony!

Last time we said good-bye to Anthony, but this week brought a nice surprise. On with the recap.

Seth Aaron remarks that things are definitely quieter without Anthony, and you know what, it really does look that way.  They seem too calm in the men's apartment. Where's the singing and loud, third person references? On the womens side, Maya is stressing, and feels that although she has done well, there is still so much for someone her age to learn. I think that takes great strength to recognize something like that. Not everyone is a wonder kid like Christian Soriano, however I do feel Maya did show great potential.

On the runway, Heidi announces that the designers will be working a red carpet look for a very difficult celebrity, which turned out to be none other than Heidi! That would just rack my nerves, and unfortunately for Maya, the pressure became too much. After a long talk with Tim, and the camera showing her empty space while the others were sketching away, Maya became the first designer in project runway history to  quit the show. All the designers are stunned, as is the audience (well, at least the one in my house.) This means that someone needs to be brought back in order to even the playing field. Guess who?????? Lets just say the third person references are back in full force. Time wise, all the designers are stressing, and Jonathon even redid his dress three times.

At the runway, the designers are treated to a celebrity judge: Jessica Alba. I''m not a fan of her acting, but fashion wise, this girl is usually flawless. Everyone seems happy with their work (save Jonathon, but that was to be expected. Anthony and Emilio end up in the top two, while Mila, Seth Aaron, Jay and Jonathon are left at the bottom, with Jay and Jonathon deemed the worst. In a surprise twist, we get not one, but two winners in Emilio and Anthony, and Jonathon gets auf'd.

My thoughts: I'm so happy Anthony came back. He brings a certain amount of levity that cuts through the bitchy, making the drama bearable. I also wasn't a fan of the mermaid dress Emilio created, but I'm not the one who was going to wear it, Heidi is, so it really doesn't matter what I think. What do you think? Did the right person go home? Were you sad to see Maya go? Were you happy to have Anthony back?

Project Runway: Bye Bye Anthony

I know I made a big fuss when Jesse was auf'd a few weeks ago, but I really do think the judges got it wrong this time. Maybe I am basing this on personality more than talent, but no one can deny that a little spark left this week, and although there are is some bitchiness left in the mix (I do mean that in a good way) it just won't be the same.

The Challenge: Design your own print.

Using those wonderful HP tablets (I am still soooooo jealous) the remaining designers were asked to design their own print which would then be transferred into their own fabric. I don't think that's ever been done before on Runway, it was really neat to see the combination of fashion and technology (a connection I would have never made on my own.) There were some interesting choices, such as Jonathon's, Anthony's and Mila's, some bizarre (Emilio's "branding" of his initials. I almost died when Tim Gunn asked if the SA stood for Seth Aaron)and others were rather bold (Mya, who is still reeling from not having won a challenge)

On the runway, the judges admired Seth Aaron's and Mya's prints, while totally falling in love with Emilio's gamble. Jonathon, Mila, and Anthony disappointed, and ended up in the bottom three.

Winner: Emilio
Out: Anthony

I can't say I'm not surprised, but I am disappointed. I know that playing it safe is never a good thing, but you have to admit that Anthony seemed to create pieces that could easily be worn by anyone off the street. Perhaps that didn't show growth in the judges eyes, and as Mila put it,  it might be difficult when creating a collection. On the flip side, Jonathon always seemed to go over the top, and even when going simple as with his print, it still came across as too conceptual. I guess the judges had to go with who they felt could make a Bryant park collection, and someone with vision will always over take simplicity. However, if you wanted to go with who totally bombed on the challenge, as it should be, then the one that should have gone home was Mila. Her print was boring and did not reflect what the challenge was about. Plus, the construction was horrible, and didn't even allow her model to walk properly down the runway. But I'm not Michale Corr's, so I can't send her home. (Though I do like to think I am just as quippy.)

Although he kept things lively, I was getting a little annoyed at all the third person references (I think I stopped counting around 5) but I am still sad to see him go. I'm pretty sure this isn't the last we will hear from Anthony.

Emilio's Extended Judging

I thought it would be fair to share both, since I did bring them up by name, but for some reason it wouldn't let me show the two in the previous post. So here is a video of Emilio getting judged below:

My DVR Moment of the Week

This weeks top choice goes to Project Runway and the judges for completely missing the mark this week. Jesse's dress may not have been a good look, however in terms of totally messing up the challenge, Emilio took a bigger risk with an even worse payoff. Now I'm not going against their critiques (which you can see below), I just think in terms of overall product, they sent the wrong person home. Hopefully Jesse can take this a stepping stone and turn into a name to truly watch out for. I'm rooting for you!!!

Jesse's Extended Critique

Runner-up: Raj and his sound effects T-shirt on the Big Bang Theory. There were so man funny moments, including Sheldon's meeting and ultimate restraining order with Stan Lee, but this is the one that had me laughing the hardest.

Missed Moment: Alicia's husband returns home on The Good Wife. Luckily I still have it saved.

Question of the Day: 3/5/2010 Project Runway Edition

You be the judge: based on Emilio's bikini or Jesse's Hershey Kiss dress, who should have been the one to have gone home?

Read my mini-recap of yesterday's Runway here.

Project Runway Mini-Recap 3/4/2010

I'm a little upset this week. I think the wrong person went home. No offense to the one that stayed, you are just as talented as the one that left, but I feel your outfit really missed the mark more for this challenge. But what we see on T.V. may not necessarily be what they see on the runway. Oh well, on with the recap!

I'm not going to get too descriptive on what happened before the runway show, since that's basically what people watch for, but the gist of this weeks challenge was to create an outfit and an accessory out of materials found in a hardware store. I always love those types of challenges. It gives a chance to see who truly has an imagination as opposed to someone that can't quite think on their feet. I also like seeing if anyone can make anything that looks like a real outfit (which actually happened, more on that below).

My top 3 was almost identical to the judges, however I think I would have placed Anthony (whose design they hated. I don't know why. Making something pretty out of hardware sounds difficult to me, and he actually achieved it) over Maya's. I didn't dislike Maya's. I just wasn't into the coat as much as the judges were. I do agree with picking Jay as the winner. His outfit actually achieved the look he wanted (garbage bags that look like leather pants and a belt. Now that's talent!) and really had the feel of something that could be worn about town. Jesse, Emilio and Anthony were at the bottom for making, respectively, a Hershey kiss, a cheesy showgirl bikini, and a bad prom dress(gotta love Michael Corrs). In the end, Jesse was out, leaving Emilio to go for another week.

I think Emilio is talented, but he would have been my choice to go home this time. The outfit wasn't an outfit and totally missed the point of the challenge. The idea to do something different was great, but the execution was just not there. Hopefully next time he can do something really spectacular. My recommendation: make sure you buy enough material, and if you know you are going to overspend, pick something else.

What do you all think? Did the right person win? Was the wrong person sent home? Or do you just not care? Comment away!

My DVR Moment of Last Week

This weeks honor goes to the Project Runway judges for finally not letting personality get in the way of the competition. Ping Wu had oodles of personality, but it just did not translate well into her creations. After a strong start(which you either loved or hated. I thought it was daring) she quickly melted into the abyss, making very obscure choices, which led me to believe that maybe daring isn't always what's best. Poor Pamela (who was booted the week before), she may not have had the best look for her models rear, but at least she kept it reigned in. So although we are down a memorable character, at least the spirit of what PR should be is now in tact.

Missed Moment: I think I might be a little obsessive, given how my last missed moment involved NPH as well. I really would have loved to have seen him judge American Idol. Even without watching, I'm on board for him to be Simon's replacement when he leaves. Who's with me?

My DVR Moment of Last Week

This weeks honor goes out to The Big Bang Theory, which had me laughing consistently, but none more so than seeing Sheldon trapped by his own security system, and no longer the master of his own bladder.

Runner-up: Elena and Damon, The Vampire Diaries. I'm still on team Stefan, but there was a kind of sweetness to their interaction, even if Damon has something up his sleeve. Just when you think our favorite bad boy vamp has gone soft, he cold heartedly (I guess there isn't any other way with a vamp) kills Gina Torres's character for tipping off Lexi's boyfriend to his whereabouts. As I have said before, I can't wait to see where this is going.

Second Runner Up: Finally a challenge on Project Runway that is a challenge to creativity and provided a little drama. Not only did the designers have to create an outfit out of a burlap sack, they were also hand selected by the models. So naturally, someone gets a little po'd.

Missed moment: An NPH directed episode of How I Met Your Mother. And I call myself a fan. For shame.

Project Runway Recap: 1/14/2010

Okay, I'm a little late in the game, but I've been working like a dog this past week and just barely got to the new Runway episode this morning. Let me just say, you can feel the energy back into our favorite reality competion (at least fashion wise). I don't know if it was the move back to New York, but I got glimpses of the PR that I have loved for so long. So let's get started.

The Contestants:

A very nicely mixed group, and one with a great amount of personality. Standouts for now(based on personality, not talent) were Anthony, Janeane, Jesus, and Seth. In just the first few minutes, Janeane was crying, Anthony spoke of himself in the third person, and Jesus was already sizing up the competition. Seth, on the other hand, was the first to tell Tim Gunn he was going to continue with his vision despite criticism(it did work for him, more on that later). Can't forget the loopy Ping. Wow, I don't even know if I can name this many designers from last season right off the bat like I can now. I thought I was going to hate Anthony, but he made me chuckle more than once. Jesus, to me, is still coming across like the Christian Soriano wannabe, but it is too early to tell, and after all, that could just be his personality.

The Runway:

Okay, so I'm not necessarily the most fashionable person, given my collection of witty t-shirts and endless supply of Old Navy jeans, but I think I can tell what looks good and doesn't.

Loved, loved, loved that Michael Corrs and Nina Garcia were here. I missed them so. I did wish there were more of Micheal's trademark quips, but it is still the first episode. As far as the dresses go, Emilio's stood out to me, and quickly became my favorite. I didn't really like Seth's (I'm just not a fan of the table cloth type of material) but it was well done, especially in the back. My least favorite was Christiane's, which looked like it was just pieced toghether when she ran out of material.

The Winner: Emilio

Out: Christiane

I'm not surprised by this. If I don't like something, that means the judges will hate it.

Some thoughts:

Nicole Richie was a pretty decent judge. She had a lot of insight and made some really good comments.

As a techical person, I am super jealous of the HP Tablets they get to use as a design tool. They looked soooooooooo sweet. I really, really, really want one (really).

This season is off to a promising start. Let's hope it can keep up the momentum.

Till next time........

Speaking of Project Runway....

If you haven't already, you can take a look at the new designers here, as well as look at their portfolios off the Liftetime website. I haven't looked it over yet, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this season will be an improvement over the last one. I didn't hate it, but like I mentioned before it didn't entertain me as much as it has in the past.

Nicole Richie to Guest Judge on Project Runway

I just read on TVGuide.com that Project Runway will have Nicole Richie on Season 7 as a guest judge. I know a lot of people will blast this apart, but after reading up on her (since although I know some, but not all), she could have actual constructive criticism for the designers. According to the article, she does have her own clothing line, as well as a line of jewelry. So I will leave my judgments until I actually see the episode. Compare this one to the casting of Kelly Osbourne for Dancing With the Stars. I'm sure when a lot of people heard her name, the insults started flying, but then the show premiered and look at what happened: she was actually kind charming, and not a bad dancer. Maybe Richie will be the same. Besides, I'm not one to talk. My best outfit is a Spaced Invaders t-shirt and a pair of long cargo shorts.

Did I ever mention how much I love Project Runway? No, well I do. Just thought I would put that out there.
